Cendres picturales (2024)

Cendres picturales was born from a series of fifty paintings designed to be witnessed only once. Every painting sold came with a dilemma: pay, see the work and burn it, or choose to pay nothing and never see the work. Thus, the canvas was only unveiled if one agreed to reduce it to ashes. Cendres picturales display a video showing fifty piles of ashes accompanied by the title of the painting and its verbal description, made by the person who purchased it.
As the buyers came from very diverse generational, cultural and socio-economic backgrounds, the testimonies obtained give way to heterogeneous perspectives completely freed from the conventions of the gaze and language of art. Paradoxically, the lavish recorded descriptions reflect destroyed matter and aesthetics to which the public will never have access. If the public experiences paintings through an intangible dimension, that of listening, they are also invited to do so through a subjectivity that is not their own, a combination that blurs their perceptual habits and adds an enigmatic depth to their experience.
Biography
Originaire de Lanaudière et maintenant établi à Trois-Rivières, Gabriel Mondor est titulaire de deux baccalauréats (Arts visuels, Arts et nouveaux médias) de l’UQTR et poursuit actuellement une maîtrise en beaux-arts à l’Université Concordia.
Depuis 2023, ses projets ont fait l’objet de plusieurs expositions solo, notamment à Engramme (Québec), Caravansérail (Rimouski), Voart (Val-d’Or), la Galerie d’art du Parc (Trois-Rivières) et au Centre d’art Jacques-et-Michel-Auger (Victoriaville). Il a également participé à plusieurs expositions collectives internationales (Serbie, Portugal, Italie, Taiwan, États-Unis, Grèce, Roumanie, Malaisie et Colombie).
Gabriel a aussi reçu plusieurs distinctions, dont le Prix Stelio Sole (2025), le Prix création en arts visuels de l’année (Culture Mauricie, 2025), ainsi que ses premières bourses de création du CALQ et du CAC. Ses œuvres font partie de collections privées et publiques, entre autres celle de l’Université Harvard, le Musée du Douro (Portugal), la BAnQ, la collection Desjardins et la ville de Joliette.
