Se fondaient imperceptiblement dans l’ombre, vague, mais profonde, 2026
Installation: wood, leather, fabric, lighting system

Se fondaient imperceptiblement dans l’ombre, vague mais profonde, is a sculptural installation that explores the texture of shadows found in early horror films from the 1940s and 1950s. Filmmakers of film noir and expressionist cinema would utilize shadow and light to evoke an aestheticized monstrosity, which resonated with the precariousness of political and economic concerns of the time.

Composed of wooden structures inspired by soundstage equipment, fabrics used in the performing arts, a lighting system and a screen, the sculpture imagined by the artist projects an oversized shadow that completely changes one’s perception of its materiality and form. Giving rise to a kind of illusionistic process, the device allows for play with shades of shadow and light to create an augmented sculpture enveloped in an atmosphere that is both dreamlike, threatening and seductive.

Biography

Amélie Brisson-Darveau’s artistic projects aim to offer an alternative experience to the “non-visible” elements of the social environment through the materialization and exploration of their tangibility. She approaches her multi-dimensional installations by experimenting with the texture and structure of textiles, which she links to other mediums such as ceramics, wood, and light.

Her work has been presented at numerous exhibitions and events in Canada, the United States and Europe, notably in Switzerland, England, Germany, Finland, Lithuania, Norway, Turkey and France. Her most recent projects were presented at the Fondation PHI pour l’art contemporain and on the screen mosaic at Place des Arts. She is also the recipient of grants from the Canada Council for the Arts, the FQRSC and the emerging artist award at the Kaunas International Biennial.
