Frédéric Loury, Founder of Festival Art Souterrain
Born in France, Frédéric Loury moved to Montreal, where he founded the SAS Gallery in 2002, presenting more than 250 exhibitions across three continents. He later served as interim director of AGAC and co-founded the Papier Art Fair (now Plural).
In 2009, he created Art Souterrain, an organization dedicated to showcasing contemporary art in public spaces. Since then, the organization has established itself as a Canadian leader in integrating artworks into unconventional environments, with over 900 artist projects realized and more than 1,000 media mentions.
In 2018, he co-founded Artch, an initiative aimed at supporting emerging artists through a program combining training, mentorship, and exhibition opportunities. In 2020, he launched an innovative artist residency program in vacant commercial spaces (“art on display”), in collaboration with Montreal’s real estate sector.
Since 2022, Art Souterrain has also been working with companies and state-owned corporations to integrate art into architecture and workplace environments.
